This was caused by USSR and US wanting to spread their influence over other nations. USSR wanted to spread communism and convert other countries inton communist countries. This way, it would be easier for them to control the other nations. On the other hand, US was trying to prevent from USSR further spreading communism. This caused conflicts between countries. Some of the main conflicts caused by this cold war were the Cuba missile crisis, Vietnam war, and the Korean war. Vietnam war and Korean war was in other ways a war between democracy and communism. Northern part of the country was supplied by USSR, and the southern part of the country was aided by US, and a war was inevitable.
US and USSR started to compete with their technology and nuclear weapons. They started pouring huge amount of money on investigating and inventing new weapons for mass destruction. This meant that unnecessary amount of money was going into developing weapons instead of in things that are real necessary for a country to survive. These nuclear/science war meant that the two countries were trying to be superior one another, and the tension was rising. As the two countries guarding and keeping eyes on each other, there were conflicts forming in between the two countries.
A lot of countries were harmed by the Cold war, especially the economically undeveloped countries, and weak countries because the cold war, which was basically the tension between the two superpowers was just too much for small countries like Vietnam and Korea to bear. The two superpowers' desire and tension led to other weak countries splitting themselves up and warring one another unnecessarily.
